On Thursday, January 24th, 6pm, at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (319 East 74th Street NY 10021), NGO KEAN (Cell of Alternative Youth Activities) held a press conference with the subject “Who said only grownups could save the planet?”. The Press Conference was under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Greece.

Planetbook is the first educational board game about the environment and climate changes which is also presented in floor version (36 square meters) and in application for android mobile phones and i-Phones. It contains 700 questions of encyclopaedic knowledge about the environmental issues of our planet, the NGO’s for its protection and Nature’s four basic elements (Earth, Air, Water and Fire). Planetbook has been distributed to over 700 schools in Greece and over 26,000 students have been advised.

 In the U.S., Planetbook was presented in three schools in New York during last week, and more particular The William Spyropoulos Greek-American Day School of St. Nicholas, The Cathedral School and The St. Demetrios Greek-American School.



The Press Conference participants were the President to the board of KEAN, Stavros Milionis, Director of Landscape Architecture / Associate Professor at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, The City College of New York, Denise Hoffman Brandt, Managing Director, Trees for the Future- David F. Tye, Director of European and Research Projects/ Associate Professor, at school of Architecture Land and Environmental Science, Neapolis University of Pafos- Dr. Julia Georgi.




Main points presented during the press conference were the following:

1.  The President of KEAN (Cell Alternative Youth Activities), Mr. Stavros Milionis, who outlined the rules of the environmental game, Planetbook , a creation of the Environmental Organization KEAN. He also reported on a very important meeting with the Director of Central Park in New York. Within this meeting they came to an agreement for a three-day event at Central Park in May 2013 with the support and cooperation of the Management of Central Park and specifically the City of New York Parks and Recreation. The management of Central Park will invite all schools located around the park in Manhattan.

2.  The Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture Program, Associate Professor, University of Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, The City College of New York-Denise Hoffman Brandt, who explained the importance of environmental games for childhood and the effect Planetbook has in creating awareness for children, on ecology, energy saving and climate change, based on the questions of the game.

3.  The Managing Director, Trees for the Future-David F. Tye who presented the cooperation and partnership with KEAN and the Trees for the Future support in Planetbook.

4.  Dr. Julia Georgi,  Associate Professor, School of Architecture and Director of Research and Programs of the European University Neapolis, Pafos, who was invited to present the topic "Game Architecture and Landscape."  Dr. Julia Georgi stressed out the possibility to integrate environmental and operating games within natural environment i.e. parks, schoolyards, forests where children can be entertained and learn at the same time about the environment.

 Main attendants at the Press Conference were the Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus in New York Mrs. Koula Sofianou who strongly supported the event with statements to the Greek Antenna Channel and on New Greek TV channel- the diaspora Greek channel.  Also the Press Conference was attended by representatives of the Greek Consulate in New York, the Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations and the Archdiocese.

Other attendants to the Press Conference were journalists, university professors, teachers from both public and private institutions and landscape architects.
