Summary
“Drawing a Greener Future” was a volunteering projects with partner countries, held in Athens.
Its main goals were to:
-raise the young participants’ environmental awareness,
-promote an environmentally friendly lifestyle,
-raise awareness and responsibility towards the environment.
At the same time, it aimed to the participants’ multifaceted development, to promote volunteering, co-operation among young people from different countries and active participation.
The project involved 4 young people from Russia and Turkey with an increased sense of responsibility towards the environment, a strong interest in volunteering and a need to develop their knowledge and skills. These are young people with fewer opportunities and a vivid interest if they come to know new cultures and experience a more environmentally friendly way of life.
During their voluntary activity in Athens, which lasted for 6 months, they implemented the following main activities:
-Conducted surveys and created awareness and information materials on important environmental issues
-Carried out beautification activities of the park’s outdoor areas and other public spaces in cooperation with the municipality of Heraklion
Participated in urban green space cleanups and educational environmental activities for children
-Participated in public protests and demonstrations on environmental and social issues.
-Informed park visitors for environmental issues and recycled materials.
The main project’s outcomes are the personal, social and professional development of young people and the variety of knowledge, skills and attitudes they have acquired such as organizational, communication and language skills, their intercultural education and the adoption of environmentally friendly daily practices. Equally important results, are the awareness-raising materials created by the young volunteers on key environmental issues such as videos, presentations and leaflets, the volunteering spirit promotion and the enhanced public awareness of environmental problems.
In the long run, more and more young people are expected to engage in volunteering activities, voluntary spirit will be promoted, young people will adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and subsequently more favorable conditions for the survival of our planet will be created.
